Do you have a lot of coins that you would like to have counted and turned into bills? There are plenty of services out there that take a nice fat chunk of your change but there are also a few that are totally free that you can take advantage of. The trick, however, is to find those free counting sources so you don’t lose your hard earned money.
Coinstar
Coinstar is practically ubiquitous and the machines are pretty good except they take a nice fat 8.9% fee! For every dollar you have counted, they take practically nine cents away. The only way around it is to turn it into an eCertificate from a vendor. Luckily, you can get it converted into an Amazon.com, Starbucks, JC Penney, Borders, or about a dozen more popular vendors absolutely free. So, if you want to use Coinstar, be sure to turn it into an eCertificate and not cash or you’ll be disappointed.
Banks
Find out if a bank near you offers free coin counting, the ones near me are Chevy Chase Bank and Commerce Bank and both allow you to use their coin counting services even if you aren’t an account holder! So, check local banks first to see if they will count them for you.
The bottom line is that you shouldn’t pay anyone to count your coins!
